2024 La Linda Malbec, Luigi Bosca

    £1495

Vibrant, polished, and true to its roots, the 2024 La Linda Malbec from Luigi Bosca is a modern classic that captures the essence of Mendoza’s high-altitude terroir. Deep violet in the glass, it opens with expressive aromas of fresh plum, black cherry, and violets, complemented by subtle hints of sweet spice, mocha, and vanilla. The palate is generous yet finely balanced, offering ripe red and black fruits layered with silky tannins and a lively acidity that lends freshness and finesse. A whisper of oak rounds out the mid-palate, leading to a smooth, elegant finish with just a touch of minerality.

Luigi Bosca is one of Argentina’s most iconic family-owned wineries, established in 1901 by the Arizu family, who have remained at the helm for over four generations. Based in Luján de Cuyo, in the heart of Mendoza, the estate has been instrumental in shaping the global reputation of Argentine Malbec through its focus on quality, innovation, and terroir expression.

The La Linda range was created to offer wines that are fruit-forward, expressive, and true to varietal character, crafted from hand-harvested grapes grown in estate vineyards situated between 850 and 1,100 meters above sea level. The altitude ensures cool nights and warm days, ideal for achieving both ripeness and freshness. The 2024 vintage continues this legacy, reflecting a near-perfect growing season with excellent fruit purity and vibrancy.

2024 ‘1753’ Syrah Sans Sulfites, Château de Campuget

    £1695

Classic Syrah nose with a very intense fruit-driven character, this classy wine shows notes of liquorice and violet complemented by a hint of dark chocolate. Rich black fruits are enveloped by a smooth and velvety texture through to a lovely fresh finish.

The grapes come from the Château’s vineyard, which is situated 15 kilometres south of Nîmes, near the village of Manduel in the heart of the ‘Appellation d’Origine Protégée’ (AOP) of the Costières de Nîmes. However, winemaker Frank-Lin Dalle has chosen to designate this wine as Vin de France to distinguish the distinctive style of this wine, which has been made without sulphites. The average age of the vines is approximately 25 years. The main characteristic of the vineyard is the soil, which is formed of ‘gress’, an accumulation of rounded pebbles that have been deposited by the overflowing Rhône River thousands of years ago. These pebbles allow the vines to grow in the best possible conditions and due to this natural soil filter; the vine’s roots can easily draw the necessary water for their growth. The vines also benefit from the Mediterranean sunshine, which bring the grapes to perfect maturity and allows them to be picked at maximum phenolic maturity in early September

Bursting with aromas of passionfruit, lime zest, gooseberry and fresh-cut herbs, it’s as lively as a summer garden after rain. The palate is crisp and juicy with waves of citrus and tropical fruit balanced by stony minerality and a mouth-watering saline edge. Elegant rather than brash, it finishes long, clean, and refreshingly dry,  a beautiful reminder of why this style conquered the world.

Pairs with: goat’s cheese salad, oysters, or lemon-grilled chicken.
If this wine were: a season, it’d be the first day of spring – fresh, bright, full of promise.

Isabel Estate, founded in 1980 and one of Marlborough’s pioneers, sits in the Wairau Valley on some of the region’s oldest Sauvignon plantings. The estate’s free-draining alluvial soils, cool nights and maritime breezes create the perfect conditions for Sauvignon Blanc of striking aromatic intensity and natural acidity.

Today, under the guidance of winemaker Jeremy McKenzie, Isabel Estate continues to refine its signature: expressive yet poised wines that highlight vineyard character over flashiness. The 2024 vintage, long and temperate, produced fruit of exceptional ripeness and balance. Fermented mainly in stainless steel with a small portion in neutral oak for texture, this release shows the estate at its best, a finely tuned Sauvignon that marries Marlborough’s exuberance with Isabel’s hallmark elegance.

2024 Mason Road GSM, Brookdale Estate

    £1795

This blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre is medium-bodied with a layered density of fruit. Liquorice root, fennel seed and ground spice precede blackberries and bramble leaf on the rich, inviting nose. Red and black berries unroll to a juicy pomegranate finish, dusted with a hint of cacao.

The grapes for this wine were carefully selected from pockets of the vineyard specifically for their fruit flavours and mouthfeel. The vineyard is planted at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Pass in granite-rich soils with clay and quartz. The clay element offers high water retention properties and releases much-needed water during the warm summer months. The lowest part of the estate is at 220 metres above sea level, climbing to 330m at the highest part. At this altitude, the vines are exposed to strong winds that naturally reduce yields and offer a much-needed cooling influence in Paarl’s warm, dry climate.
